Germany Kent, an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker, social activist, promoter of volunteerism, and world’s beloved philosopher encourages us to use our voices to effect change and give back and has emerged as an inspirational global impact leader.
A pillar in the Los Angeles community, in the aftermath of both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, Kent has been coordinating emergency services for those impacted by the natural disaster by distributing humanitarian aid and supporting first responders, and local families.
No stranger to assisting families in crisis, the pioneering journalist, producer, and filmmaker has covered large-scale events such as historic massacres and other natural disasters and responded to supporting the recovery of impacted communities to help families cope and build resilience.
“I am deeply saddened by this significant tragedy that has affected so many people across our region,” said Kent. My heart goes out to everyone who is experiencing emotional distress related to the disasters.”
The filmmaker has been documenting those helping with humanitarian relief assistance. She complimented World Central Kitchen’s immediate response to the needs of families in Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Altadena, and Pasadena.
World Central Kitchen (WCK) is a food charity founded by celebrity chef José Andrés. It provides meals to communities around the world in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises.
“The World Central Kitchen is mobilizing to provide relief to first responders and displaced families impacted by the wildfires,” said Kent. “When disaster strikes, the World Central Kitchen has been able to successfully meet the demands of feeding residents and public engagement.”
According to their website as of today, the World Central Kitchen has served over 1 million meals to first responders and families impacted by wildfires in Southern California.
“WCK is just wonderful. They showed up ready to serve across the region where communities sustained significant damage providing hot meals, kind words, and smiles,” according to Kent.
“The organization says hundreds of locals have joined in their efforts, cooking, serving meals, and helping to connect fire victims with resources,” said Kent.
As of today, the wildfires in Southern California have killed at least 29 people and forced more than 200,000 more to evacuate. The fires have burned over 57,000 acres of land.
“Victims of the wildfires are in limbo as they wait for aid and a new beginning,” said Kent. “We should all be ready to provide humanitarian assistance in our community when needed and have the heart to respond to complex emergencies to help humanity whenever the need arises.”
With more than 18,000 homes and structures destroyed, estimates for recovery are in the billions. Additionally, some acres housing livestock, including cattle, and horses, along with some cows, sheep, pigs, donkeys, and chickens were evacuated or lost.
WCK has collaborated with local restaurants and food trucks to support resilience and recovery assisting evacuees and emergency crews.
“I salute all of these volunteer teams on the frontlines of disasters and all of the humanitarian workers who are making a difference every day working in communities around the world,” said Kent.
