A Dating App is Trying Something Different and People Are Actually Paying Attention

Dating apps have become basically unbearable for a lot of people. You swipe, you match, you text back and forth feeling like maybe this could be something, and then reality kicks in. The person you’ve been talking to might not exist. Or they exist in a call center somewhere running the same script on fifty other matches. Or they’re just a bot designed to keep you swiping forever.

HundRoses is a new dating platform launching in Canada and the US that wants to fix this. Their approach is pretty simple: before you can message anyone, you have to verify that you’re actually a real person. You can still browse all day without verification. But the moment you want to have a conversation, the app requires proof your human.

Its not revolutionary but it feels like something people should’ve demanded from dating apps years ago.

The Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

Dating used to be about going out and meeting people. Now it’s about algorithms and engagement metrics. The big apps aren’t really trying to get you into relationships. That would mean you’d leave the app. They want you swiping every single day.

So fake profiles? Bots? Catfish? Thats basically a feature not a bug. More profiles means more reasons to keep the app open. More swipes means more ads. More engagement means more people willing to pay for premium features like seeing who liked you or rewinding your last reject.

HundRoses is betting that people are finally fed up enough to try something different. The tagline is “Swipe Less, Spark More” which is cheesy but whatever. The actual idea is that if everyone on the app is verified, the conversations might actually be between real humans who want to meet each other.

The Catch

This isnt going to solve dating. A verified person can still be a jerk. They can still disappear after two weeks. Verification doesn’t mean chemistry or compatibility or honesty about what people actually want.

But what it does do is eliminate the first problem. You know your talking to someone real. You know they went through the effort to verify. That reduces the bots and the scammers and the people just looking to waste time.
